Johnson pleased with way his defence coped

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson was pleased that Cheltenham gave his defence a good test on Saturday in the 1-1 draw at Whaddon Road.

The game was an open one that either side could have won, but Johnson was glad to see the way his defence kept control when placed under pressure by the league two outfit.

David Clarkson netted for City to cancel out David Bird's strike.

Johnson told the club's official website: 'There were a lot of chances for either side - we need to create more at one end and stop them creating at the other end.

'I don't want to see a really open game, but sometimes in pre-season it's good to see your defenders put under pressure in order to see how well they cope.

'I thought it was a thoroughly entertaining game for all those in attendance.

'I was also pleased for David for the goal. He could have scored just before with a header but he made no mistake from close range. After the Ajax defeat it was nice to get a goal and create some chances.'
