GERKEN PRAISED AFTER WIN AT BRENTFORD

GERKEN PRAISED AFTER WIN AT BRENTFORD

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson watched his side just manage to overcome Brentford to go into round two of the Carling Cup and admitted after that he was indebted to the performance of goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

City won the game 1-0 with Nicky Maynard getting the all important goal on 58 minutes, it turned out to be enough to win the game and put the Robins through, but it was Gerken who made sure of that passage.

The City stopper made three class saves from Sam Saunders to keep the Bees at bay, but City also had their share of luck when Steve Kabba went around the keeper and then fired wide and then Saunders headed the ball against the crossbar.

There was also a sending off for the Robins, Danny Haynes saw red after bringing down Ryan Dickson while already on a yellow card, the gaffer described that as childish.

He said: "I'm disappointed in Danny. He has got to learn from the first booking.

"He isn't a youngster he has to grow up.

"You are always relieved to be through and we needed Dean Gerken to do what he did.

"He made some fantastic saves. He has gone beyond the call of duty."
