Pitman aiming to 'do a Maynard'

City forward Brett Pitman wants to 'do a Nicky Maynard' and establish himself as a top Championship striker.

The former Bournemouth youngster scored his first goal for City in the 2-0 win over Leicester at the weekend, after waiting 13 games to open his account for the Robins.

And like Maynard, Pitman also carved out a prolific career in the lower leagues before making the step up with City in the summer.

"I believe in my own ability and I'd like to think I can do as well as Nicky once I find my feet," Pitman told the Bristol Evening Post.

"It's a big, big step-up from Leagues One and Two to the Championship and I know it took Nicky quite a while to get used to the difference.

"Since coming here, I've found the hardest thing is keeping up with the pace of the game in this league.

"It's a lot quicker than anything I've been used to before and I found it hard to begin with.

"The defenders tend to be that bit better and, unlike League One where you might get five or six chances in a game, you only get one or two in the Championship.

"But Nicky Maynard got used to it and proved he could make the step-up and so can I.

"It was a mixture of relief and enjoyment to score my first goal and, now I've got that out of the way, I can concentrate on improving my game without worrying about anything else."
