Millen eyeing Taylor move

Bristol City have joined the race to sign left-back Andrew Taylor from Middlesbrough.

The 24-year-old is poised to leave the Riverside on a free transfer when his contract expires next week, although Boro have asked the versitile defender to take a significant pay cut to remain in the north-east.

But City's main competition for Hartlepool-born Taylor comes from Cardiff and their new boss Malky Mackay.

Mackay took Taylor on loan at Watford last season, where he played 19 games before returning to the Riverside and forcing his way into Tony Mowbray's plans.

And now City boss Millen is thought to have tried to hijack the bid with an eleventh hour move to bring the former England U21 full-back to Ashton Gate.

Taylor was understood to have held talks with both clubs on Monday before returning to the north-east to make a decision before the end of the week.

Boro boss Tony Mowbraw said: "The boy's got some decisions to make. But I think Cardiff are a different financial club to us, they could probably match if not better what we could offer financially.

"In football terms I think that Andrew would still like to be here playing but next week will decide that."

Millen will be keen to tie up any deals before his squad returns for pre-season training on Friday.

They are gonna need to pull out all the stops to get this guy. Cardiff are nailed on for him. If we do I will be feeling very optimistic for next season.
