City Embarrassed By Wednesday

League One Sheffield Wednesday came to Ashton Gate on Saturday and embarrassed the home side with a stunning second-half display that put them into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

City were hoping to swell the coffers with a good run in the Cup and went into the game being unbeaten in their last three games.

The Robins held their own in the first half, but things started to go wrong in the second period when they succumbed to an early goal from Gary Teale.

Then Wednesday striker Neil Mellor headed in a second on 55 minutes before Clinton Morrison netted the third just nine minutes later, it was all over for the home side.

Despite losing Stephen Caulker early in the game through injury, the Robins looked good and should really have led at half-time, but Albert Adomah and Brett Pitman shot wide of target and then Marvin Elliott headed just wide from Jamal Campbell-Ryce's corner.

Elliott then headed another corner just over the bar and there were further chances for Pitman and Stead, but neither could convert.

The home side were made to pay for not taking their chances when Wednesday took a shock lead four minutes after the break through Teale, who got his head to a Chris Sedgwick cross from the right.

The visitors continued to press and found themselves two goals to the good six minutes later when Jones sent over a cross and Mellor headed home.

Sedgwick missed a chance to make it three by firing over the bar from close range, but Morrison sealed the game when he slotted home a ball across the box from Mellor.

City tried to strike back but Fontaine headed over the bar while Stead and Pitman forced saves from Nicky Weaver.
