City End Walsall's Play Off Hopes

Walsall
0 - 1
Bristol City

Banks' Stadium

Saturday, 12 April

Attendance: 5,110

Referee:

A first-half penalty by top scorer Sam Baldock put an end to fading play off hopes from Walsall and probably keeps City in League One after reaching 50 points.

Baldock smashed home after Andy Taylor had fouled the same man in the penalty area a minute before half time and The Robins' top scorer was only too pleased to claim his 23rd goal of the season.

Walsall had a penalty of their own in the second half when Greg Cunningham fouled Ngoo just before the hour mark and the ref pointed to the spot.

Sam Mantom took the kick but Simon Moore was equal to it and saved easily.

The home side had most of the play as they searched for an equaliser but they didn't worry City too much as the centre backs were in no mood for letting the lead go. Nyron Nosworthy having an exceptional game as he celebrated an extension to his loan spell.

Walsall's best chances besides the penalty was a free kick from Mantrom and an effort from Featherstone late on that went over the bar.

But as the game approached it's final stages, Tyrone Barnett put in a rasping drive that O'Donnell just managed to save.

Walsall (4-2-3-1): O`Donnell; J Chambers, Downing, Butler, Taylor; Mantom, A Chambers (Featherstone 85); Sawyers, Baxendale (McQuilken 73), Ngoo (Bakayoko (67); Brandy.

Bristol City (3-5-2): Moore; Nosworthy, Osborne, Williams; Wagstaff (Pearson 89), Pack, Emmanuel-Thomas (Barnett 80), Elliott, Cunningham; Paterson (Moloney 68), Baldock.

Referee: Nigel Miller (Co Durham)
